interview – “WHITEREAD”

今シーズンから取り扱いをスタートさせた”WHITEREAD”。
ブログでご紹介したのもまだ記憶に新しいですが、せっかくなのでおさらいとしてまずはブランド紹介から。

About Whiteread（ホワイトリード）
デザイナー・Izabella Doyle（イザベラドイル）により設立され、自身の美学や哲学を表現するブランド。toogoodをはじめ、様々なブランドのデザインチームやパタンナーとして活躍した経験を持つ彼女の、確かな技術によりコレクションは構成されている。
そのアイテムはヴィンテージ、リサイクル、デッドストックの生地を使用し、イギリスとスコットランドにてハンドメイドで製作されており、一つひとつが唯一無二の作品です。
生地に穴が見つかった場合は、その周りを切り取らず作品に組み込み、修復しています。手作業と複雑なディテールがアイテムそれぞれに丁寧に落とし込まれています。

１. Could you please tell us about your background?

「あなたのバックグラウンドについて教えてください」

Originally from Ireland and studied fashion in Dublin, after working as a chef around the world for a couple of years I moved to London, where I pursued a career working for many of London’s most revered fashion brands.
for 18yrs before moving to Dorset to a small holding with my family to pursue a different pace of life.

アイルランド出身で、ダブリンでファッションを学びました。シェフとして数年間世界中で働いた後、ロンドンに移り、ロンドンで最も尊敬されている多くのファッションブランドでキャリアを積みました。
その後18年間ドーセットに移り住み、家族とともに小さな農園でこれまでとは違った生活のペースを追求しています。

2. What made you to start your own brand?

「ブランドを立ち上げたキッカケは？」

Whiteread is a sustainable and independent fashion label founded by Mitz and Izabella.
Mitz approached Izabella with a shared vision to express their own aesthetic and philosophy.
The collection is made of vintage, recycled and deadstock fabrics with sustainably sourced new materials.
It is handmade in England by a small team, with the utmost care and consideration to make each piece unique.
Our Alpaca knitwear is made on a small farm nestled in Exmoor national park, the animals and the garments are made all within the same farm.

Whitereadは、MitzとIzabellaによって設立された持続可能なインディペンデントブランドです。
MitzはIzabellaに、自分たちの美学と哲学を表現するという共通のビジョンを持ちかけました。
コレクションは、ヴィンテージ、リサイクル、デッドストックの生地と、持続可能な方法で調達された新素材で作られています。
英国で少人数のチームによってハンドメイドされ、一着一着が唯一無二のものとなるよう細心の注意と配慮が払われています。
私たちのアルパカ・ニットウェアはエクスムーア国立公園の中にある小さな農場で作られており、動物も衣服もすべて同じ農場内で作られています。

3.What is something that you keep in your mind when thinking about design?

「デザインを考えるときに心に留めていることは何ですか？」

How to make a simple, sculptural collection using cut and drape at the forefront of the designs.
Using a simple Black and White palette that is a cleanse from the fast paced fashion industry.

カットとドレープをデザインの前面に押し出した、シンプルで彫刻的なコレクションを作ること。
白と黒のシンプルなパレットを使うことで、目まぐるしく変化するファッション業界とは一線を画す。

4. Who are some of the women for whom you are inspired?

「インスピレーションの源となる女性は？」

We are inspired by Writers and Artists, film makers and poets, like minded women who sit within their own realm and are not easily influenced by ever changing fast paced world of today.

私たちは作家や芸術家、映画製作者や詩人など、自分の領域に身を置き、目まぐるしく変化する現代社会に簡単に左右されない、同じような考えを持つ女性たちからインスピレーションを受けています。

5. Are there any things you are recently focusing on or would like to challenge in the future?

「最近力を入れていること、今後挑戦したいことはありますか？」

We are constantly looking to improve the building blocks that we create each season what we should continue with and what we can start again with.

私たちは毎シーズン、何を継続し、何から始めるべきかを常に考えています。

6. What are the important aspects of your life?

「最後に、人生で大切にしていることを教えてください」

This collection drew inspiration from a series of paintings by Forrest Bess that were exhibited in the Camden Arts Centre.
Bess was a painter and fisherman who lived his life in obscurity at an isolation bait camp off the east coast of Texas.
The texture and tones of his paintings as well as the forms within them, echo throughout the collection.

このコレクションは、カムデン・アーツ・センターで展示されたフォレスト・ベスの一連の絵画からインスピレーションを得ている。
ベスは画家であり漁師であったが、テキサス東海岸沖の隔離されたベイトキャンプで無名の生涯を送った。
彼の絵画の質感や色調、そしてその中のフォルムは、コレクション全体に響き渡っています。

ドーセットという自然豊かな地に暮らしながら、彼女の思うサスティビリティや哲学を丁寧且つ美しくデザインに昇華してく。
今でも工場の状況やアートディレクションなど全て自身の目を通して運営しているというイザベラ。
物づくりに真摯に向き合う姿勢の彼女から生み出されるコレクションは、服を見ると作り手や製造プロセスが想像できるようにも感じます。
