Designer Interview【RENATA BRENHA】

MAIDENS SHOP WOMENをオープンするにあたって、MUSEとして掲げているGeorgia O’Keeffe。
自立した革新的な女性という繋がりから、当店にてお取り扱いしている
女性デザイナーブランドにフォーカスした”CRAFTS WOMEN vol.2”。

いくつかのブランドの中からデザイナーさんにインタビューをお応えして頂けたので、
ぜひ皆様と改めてブランドを深く知るきっかけになれたらと思います。

最初ご紹介させていただくのは、今季から新しくお取り扱いをスタートしたブランドです。

【RENATA BRENHA/レナータ・ブレナ】

ロンドンを拠点に活動するブラジル人女性デザイナーレナータ・ブレナ。
ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートでWomenswearのファッションの修士号を取得。
職人的な技術と直感的な手法を研究し、デザインに人間的側面を取り戻すことで、現代ファッションの現状におけるラテンアメリカ人女性の代弁者として立ち上がったブレナ。ラテンアメリカの様々な文化が彼女の美学とアプローチの両方を定義しています。
ブレナのテキスタイルは、職人技と、他の方法では廃棄物とみなされるような物から慎重に選ばれた素材にあります。
そして大部分が自社開発されています。
持続可能な方法とクラフトマンシップを推進し、現代のグローバルな課題に立ち向かうことができる新しいクリエイティブな手法を開発することを目標としているブランドです。

1. あなたの経歴について教えてください。
Could you please tell us about your background?

私はロンドンを拠点に活動するブラジル人ファッションデザイナーです。
私のブランドは現代ファッションの関係において、ラテンアメリカ人女性の代弁者として職人的な技術と直感的な手法を研究し、デザインにおける人間らしさを取り戻しています。
ラテンアメリカの様々な文化が、ブランドの美学とアプローチの両方を定義しています。

I’m a Brazilian fashion designer based in London.
My brand stands as a Latin American female voice in the context of contemporary fashion, researching artisanal techniques and intuitive methods to regain the human aspect in design.
The largely mixed Latin America culture defines both the brand aesthetics and approach.

2. 自分のブランドを始めたきっかけは何ですか？
What made you start your own brand?

自分のアイデアをより具体的に表現する方法を探していたところ、自分の身体と向き合うことはとても良いことだと思いました。
ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートの修士課程は、デザイナーとして独立するための重要なステップでした。
自分の興味のある分野をより深く掘り下げ、実験のプロセスを広げ、自分の声をデザインを通して発信していくことへの後押しとなったからです。

I was looking for a way to channel my ideas in a more concrete way and I found that working with my own body was a great way to start.
My master’s degree at the Royal College of Art was really an essential step towards becoming and independent designer, as it encouraged me to dig deeper on my areas of interest, expand my experimentation process and develop my own language, voice through design.

3. デザインを考えるときに心に留めていることは何ですか？
What is something that you keep in your mind when thinking about design?

南米の起源についてさらに調べてみると、アイディアの源にもなる豊かで非常に多様な領域があり、
何よりもサスティナブルな方法で世界と交流するための考え方があることがわかりました。
そこでまず私たちの身の回りに豊富にある、使わなければゴミになってしまうような素材に注目します。
倉庫にあるデッドストックの生地や、ヴィンテージのカクテルナプキン、あるいは古い羽毛布団や枕など、
リサイクルされた生地や素材に新しい技術を施したものなど様々です。
私はこれらの素材にセカンドチャンスを与えるという考え方が好きで、そこから職人的なプロセスが始まります。
私は主にハンドスモッキング（プリーツ加工）を使っていますが、かぎ針編みも使っており、シーズンごとに新しい技術を常に模索しています。

Researching more into the South American origins I’ve found a rich and extremely diverse territory for ideas and above all a mindset to interact in a much more sustainable way with the world.
So first, I look for the materials that are in abundance in our surroundings and that if not used they might go into waste.
It could be deadstock fabrics in a warehouse, vintage cocktail napkins or even new technology on recycled fabrics and materials, such as old duvets and pillows.
I like the idea of giving these materials a second chance, and that is where the artisanal process begins.
I mostly work with hand-smocking (pleating) but also with crochet and am always searching for new techniques each season.

4.インスピレーションの源となっている女性は誰ですか？
Who are some of the women for whom you are inspired?

ラテンアメリカの先住民の服装、先住民が行っていた職人技、儀式用の作品、民間伝承、
そして私たちの文化を形成してきた強い女性たちからインスピレーションを受けています。
例えば、Carolina Maria de Jesus(カロリナマリアデジーサス)や、アーティストのVictoria Santa Cruz(ビクトリア・サンタクルース)やSonia Braga(ソニア・ブラガ)など。
また、私の祖母や母など私の生い立ちに最も大きな影響を与えた女性たちからもインスピレーションを受けています。
そして、豊かな文化的背景が新しいシルエットや色、テクスチャーにどのように反映されるのかに興味があります。
これらはすべて、私たちを取り巻く廃棄物を再認識し、私たちの技術を向上させ、今日のファッションの新しい可能性を提案する強い美学でありながら、どこかこの女性古来の知恵に根ざしている、新しい女性のエネルギーになるものだと思います。

I’m inspired by the original people of Latin America, how they used to dress, the artisanal techniques practiced by indigenous people, ceremonial pieces, folklore, and the strong women that have shaped our culture, some examples are the poet Carolina Maria de Jesus and the artistz Victoria Santa Cru and Sonia Braga.
Also, by the women who had the most profound impact on my upbringing like my both grandmothers and mother.
I’m particularly interested on how the largely mixed and rich cultural background of Brazil can inform new silhouettes, colours, and textures.
All these for me come to fuel a new feminine energy, with strong aesthetics that reimagine the waste surrounding us, elevate our craft and overall propose new possibilities for fashion today yet somehow rooted in this female ancient wisdom.

5.最近力を入れていること、今後チャレンジしたいことはありますか？
Are there any things you are focusing on recently or would like to challenge in the future?

私たちは、クラフトとサステナビリティにフォーカスしています。
その為に、各分野の専門家と交流することで、素材への感謝や環境との相互依存性への深い理解を共有し、より意識の高いコミュニティを発展させることができます。
また、様々なバックグラウンドを持つ女性デザイナーとして、業界の多様性と活気に貢献することを目指しています。

Our focus is on craft and sustainability, by doing that we connect with many other experts in the fields; these interchanges help to develop a more conscious community sharing the same appreciation for materials and a deep understanding of the interdependency with our environment.
Also, as a female designer, from a mixed background, we aim to contribute to the diversity and vibrancy of the industry.

6.人生において最も大切にしたい事は何ですか？
What do you think are the most important aspects of life?

常に学び、自分の手で仕事をすること。シンプルさを養い、誰に対しても、環境に対しても、
気づきと喜びと思いやりをもって体験し、人生を大切にすること。

To always learn and work with your own hands. To cultivate simplicity, cherish life by experiencing it with awareness, joy, and compassion to everyone and to our environment.

インタビューからも読み取れる彼女の強い信念のもと作り上げられている洋服達は、デザインだけでなく生地や工程にも拘りを感じられます。
廃棄されるはずだった物に新しいシルエットや意味を生み出す、ラテンアメリカ出身という背景をもつ彼女の独自のファッションへのアプローチはブランドの世界観にもとても反映されており、今後の活躍もとても楽しみです！
