Designer Interview【MAGDA MADE】

こんにちは、ヴィラロです。
本日はSS21からお取り扱いがスタートした、コロンビアのブランドMAGDA MADEのご紹介です。
入荷してからちゃんとご紹介できておらず、インスタグラムを中心にコーディネートで登場している事が多かったのですが…Blogを書くのが今になってしまい申し訳ありません！
ありがたいことに店頭では完売している形もいくつかあり、やはり夏に向けてかごBagお探しの方も多いように思います☀︎
本日は引き続きデザイナーインタビューも交えながら、ブランドについてやデザイナーの想いを知っていただければ幸いです。

-MAGDA MADE

マグダメイドは2018年にアメリカ人女性MALACHIとSHANNONの２人によってスタートしました。
バッグを中心にコロンビアの伝統的な技法を生かした製品を作成しています。
ブランド名のMAGDAはコロンビアの主要な川であるMAGDALA川の名前に由来しています。
天然繊維を活かしたバッグは丈夫で耐久性に優れています。

MAGDA MADEはコロンビアで製品を作成することで現地の伝統織物を守るだけでなく
職人たちの働く機会を増やしたり、地域開発プログラムをサポートすることで持続可能な市場を作ることにも務めています。

1. あなたの経歴について教えてください。
Could you please tell us about your background?

Malachiは、人権と国際問題を学んだバックグラウンドを持っています。
修士号を取得後、Magda Madeを立ち上げる前はミャンマーとネパールで女性の経済開発の分野で働いていました。
Malachiはコネチカット州出身で、現在はバーモント州のバーリントンに住んでいます。

Shannonは、コロラド州デンバー出身で、現在はコロンビアのボゴタに住んでいます。
彼女のバックグラウンドはコミュニケーションとフォトジャーナリズムです。
Magdaを立ち上げる前は、デジタルで起業家を支援する中小企業の開発に携わっていました。また、ヨガも教えています。

Malachi has a background in human rights and international affairs.
After finishing her masters degree, she spent time working in Myanmar and Nepal in the field of women’s economic development prior to starting Magda Made.
Malachi is originally from Connecticut and now lives in Burlington, Vermont.

Shannon is from Denver, Colorado and now lives in Bogota, Colombia.
Her background is in communications and photojournalism.
Prior to starting Magda, she worked in small business development that focused on digitally empowering entrepreneurs. She also teaches yoga.

2. 自分のブランドを始めたきっかけは何ですか？
What made you start your own brand?

私たちは長年の友人であり、旅のパートナーでもありますが、社会貢献型のビジネスを始めることを常に夢見ていました。
私たちは、旅行とアート、持続可能性、インパクトを組み合わせたことをしたかったのです。
2017年にShannonがコロンビアに移住したとき、才能があるのに十分に表現されていない職人が豊富にいることを知り、
私たちが探していた且つ、関心のある事をすべて組み合わせた機会をすぐに見出すことができました。
Magdaを立ち上げた事の私たちの願いは、コロンビアの職人を世界中の人々と結びつけるプラットフォームを作ると同時に、
文化の保護を大切にし、国内の非常に辺鄙な地域に住む職人の多くに経済的な機会を増やすことでした。

We are long-time friends and travel partners who always dreamed of starting a socially driven business.
We wanted to do something that combined travel with art, sustainability, and impact.
When Shannon moved to Colombia in 2017, we found a wealth of talented but underrepresented artisans and we immediately saw the opportunity we had been looking for that combined all of our interests.
Our hope with starting Magda was to create a platform that connects Colombian artisanry with a global audience while at the same time valuing cultural preservation and providing increased economic opportunity for artisans, many of whom live in very remote areas of the country.

3. デザインを考えるときに心に留めていることは何ですか？
What is something that you keep in your mind when thinking about design?

まず、私たちは職人のオリジナルデザインを優先し、彼らの作品を意図した通りに強調することを目指しています。
パートナーの中には、新しいデザインに挑戦することを楽しみにしている人もいて、他とは違うものを作ることにチャレンジしています。
そのような場合は、機能的で、シックで、柔軟性のある製品をデザインするようにしています。
個人的には、私たち二人ともゆったりとしたスタイルを持っていて、何にでも合う、あまり考えなくてもいいようなアイテムが好きです。
また、私たちは天然繊維や草木染め、ユニークなテクスチャーに惹かれる傾向があります。

First, we prioritize the original design of the artisans and aim to highlight their work as it was intended.
Some of our partners are excited to take on new designs and enjoy the challenge of creating something different.
In those cases we try to design products that are functional, chic, and flexible – personally, we both have styles that are laid back and we love items that go with everything and don’t require too much thought.
We also tend to gravitate more towards natural fibers, plant dyes, and unique textures.

4. 最後に、インスピレーションの源となっている女性は誰ですか？
Who are some of the women for whom you are inspired?

私たちは、自分自身をしっかりと持つことを教えてくれた素晴らしい母親のもとで育ちました。
また、私たちには素晴らしい女性の友人たちがいて、彼女たちのスタイルや情熱、家族のあり方に、常に新しい刺激を受けています。
さらに、私たちが一緒に仕事をしている職人の約80％は、創作やデザインだけでなく、自分のビジネスを運営している女性です。
彼らとのパートナーシップは、常にインスピレーションの源となっています

We both grew up with amazing mothers who taught us to have a strong sense of self.
We also have an incredible group of female friends who inspire us in new ways all the time with their style, their passions, and their families.
Additionally, around 80% of the artisans we work with are also women who not only create and design but also manage their own businesses – our partnerships with them are a constant source of inspiration!

文化や伝統の保護はもちろん、職人とのパートナーシップにおいても社会的貢献に力を入れているMalachiさんとShannonさん。
本当にお二人の心の美しさを感じます。
先ほどのインタビューの最後にもありましたが、インスピレーションの源である素晴らしい家族と素敵な友人。
二人を取り巻く人・モノがこれからもずっと現地コロンビアで愛され続けていくブランドを作り、さらに世界中に活動の素晴らしさが伝わっていくのだと思います。
日本東京でMAGDA MADEの良さを知っていただける１店舗がMAIDENS SHOP WOMENであることもとても嬉しく感じました。
